If you are about to start freelance you want to know if you really have chance to make it out there. You’ve probably heard about outsourcing and people in countries like India and Eastern Europe doing the same jobs for less. Don’t let competition from other countries bother you. If you deliver quality service, you will be able to get what you want for your work.

Competition helps you to stay on your toes, it doesn’t matter what business are you in there will be always people that charge less for the same service. There is much more than price that clients consider when choose web developer or designer for their project. After all if you prove a client that you are good they’ll come back no matter how much you charge.

You may have to start with lower prices but as you build your portfolio with quality projects you’d be able to charge more and make more. You also have the opportunity to “meet” people from all over your own country and the world. Where you work isn’t an issue. How you work is what counts. If a client isn’t located locally try to communicate with him as much as you can, don’t rely only on IM and email, speak with him on the phone; use some project management or bug tracking tool if you are developing or design website, keep him updated all the time, make him feel like he is in your office, don’t let the long distance to be an issue and he’ll be satisfied with your service.

Make sure you have a good portfolio and keep it up to date. Get referrals from those who are satisfied with your work to use as references. And the last advice I can give you is never give up, if you are in what you are doing you’ll definitely make it sooner or later.
